Raleigh, NC (May 8, 2017) – On May 2nd and 3rd, Choate Construction teamed with Wakefield High School and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Carolinas for a Students’ Hands on Experience Day (S.H.E.D.) competition.

Eight teams of high school carpentry students from Wake County competed to construct an 8’0” x 11’6” shed while receiving mentorship from local general contractors and subcontractors. The S.H.E.D. competition is part of the ABC Carolinas Schools to Careers committee, designed to raise awareness about construction-related careers. Safety Manager Jim Spratley spearheaded the Choate/Wakefield High School team, mentoring the students prior to and throughout the shed build on the importance of safety, quality, planning, and scheduling.

Following the shed build, local building inspectors and safety officers from various construction companies judged each shed and selected the winning team. The winning school of the shed build competition was awarded new power and hand tools donated by event sponsors. The Choate/Wakefield High School team placed second overall in the competition.

Completed sheds are auctioned off and the money is used to support the ABC Carolinas Schools to Careers committee scholarship fund. The scholarship is set up for students to attend trade, vocational, or construction-related curriculums.

“Engaging and mentoring youth prepares high school students for their future and encourages career development. Choate is proud to support the ABC Carolinas Schools to Careers and Wake County high school students as they are the next generation of construction industry professionals,” Safety Director Jim Spratley said.
