Continuing a 15-year relationship built on trust and excellence, Choate Construction is proud to bring Shepherd Center’s latest vision to life through the construction of the Marcus Center for Advanced Rehabilitation (MCAR). This 14-story, 389,000-square-foot facility supports one of the nation’s top-ranked neurorehabilitation hospitals as it expands its footprint and impact in Atlanta’s healthcare landscape.

A Facility Built for Healing and Innovation

MCAR dramatically enhances Shepherd Center’s ability to deliver world-class care, adding:

  • Extensive medical office space to support expanded surgical capabilities
  • A skybridge connection to the existing hospital, improving access for patients and staff
  • Integrated parking and modern office space to streamline operations
  • Green spaces and therapeutic garden, thoughtfully designed to promote patient recovery and overall well-being

This transformative healthcare construction project allows for the expansion of outpatient services and day programs while also providing a dedicated environment for clinical research and innovation.

Expanding Surgical Capacity and Patient Outcomes

The Dean Stroud Spine and Pain institute, located within the new facility, offers multidisciplinary treatment aimed at restoring function, enhancing quality of life, and promoting long-term independence for those living with chronic pain. The facility’s next-generation surgical suites are purpose-built for precision and efficiency, helping elevate patient care and long-term outcomes.

Hear from Shepherd Center’s Facilities Director William Davidson as he walks the project team through the facility, speaking on the behind-the-scenes healthcare systems and infrastructure that are required to keep the hospital running smoothly.

A Hub for Research and Innovation

Located on the top floor, Shepherd Center’s new 30,000 square foot Innovation Institute allows for collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and engineers to develop cutting-edge solutions that enhance patient care and advance neurorehabilitation. A fully equipped assessment suite enables motion analysis and behavioral data collection to identify the needs of people with disabilities and enhance their quality of life.

Choate coordinated closely with GDOT and the City of Atlanta to minimize disruptions during construction. Improvements to ADA access points were made proactively, and a highly structured daily delivery schedule helped alleviate congestion on the tight urban site. The team logged more than 375,000 worker hours, managing more than 17,500 CY of concrete and 1,671 tons of rebar with safety and precision.

To ensure optimal performance of building systems, third-party commissioning verified that all HVAC and mechanical elements met exacting standards for functionality, energy efficiency, and compliance.

Safety Innovations That Set a New Standard

A full-building alarm system was implemented during construction with centralized controls in the site’s main trailer, enabling rapid emergency response. Unscheduled evacuation drills were conducted throughout each phase of the build, reinforcing Choate’s unwavering commitment to safety-first construction practices.
