The Cape Fear Medical Office Building marks a major milestone in healthcare for the region, delivering the first dedicated cancer treatment and care facility in the county. Located adjacent to the Central Harnett Hospital, this facility reduces the need for patients to travel far from home to access critical oncology and specialty services. Choate Construction was selected to build both the core and shell as well as the interior upfit of this medical office building, delivering the state-of-the-art, three story facility early and under budget. The project completed and passed eight inspections in just four days, driving home the results of the project’s exceptional coordination and scheduling precision.

Precise Construction Facilitating Cutting-Edge Treatment

A key component and one of the most critical challenges of this project was the installation of a Linear Accelerator (LINAC), which is a highly specialized radiation therapy machine. Through a combination of trade partner coordination, clear and consistent communication, and expertise, the project team ensured seamless execution across multiple stakeholders.

The team conducted early coordination with medical staff, physicists, and vendors to specify the correct LINAC model, and worked with the design team to plan for eight-foot-thick concrete walls to meet radiation shielding requirements.

Through precision engineering, a 37,000-lb, lead-lined automatic sliding door supported by 5,000-lb header weights was installed to ensure radiation containment. An uplifting scripture — curated by the hospital pastor — was inscribed onto the concrete walls prior to drywall installation, imbuing the very structure with messages of hope. The vendor’s national LINAC installer remarked that this was one of the best installation-ready rooms he’d ever seen — a testament to the high standards of Choate’s project teams and the skilled execution of trade partners.
